What a furnace cleaning actually involves

Power goes off at the service switch first. Gas valve closed. The blower door comes off, then the blower assembly unbolts and slides out. The squirrel cage wheel is cleaned blade by blade, off to the side, not blown around the basement. Burner tray out. Flame sensor scuffed clean. Inducer housing and drain port checked. Then reassembly and a watched startup.

The blower wheel is the real target. Older Jackson County homes often use panned-joist returns, where the floor cavity itself acts as the return duct. Joist bays hold insulation fiber and old construction debris. Wall dust collects there too. That gets pulled straight through the filter slot and onto the wheel. Dust packs into the blade curve. The wheel still spins. It just stops moving air.

We also look above the furnace. In most basement installs the evaporator coil sits right there. Long humid cooling seasons leave mold at the coil face and standing water in the pan. That odor usually shows up on the first heat call in fall.

Cleaning will not fix hot upstairs rooms. That traces to undersized returns or closed branch runs. Crushed flex in a vented attic causes it too. A cracked heat exchanger means replacement talk, not cleaning.
